The series, as written by Elbert Hubbard, edited and arranged by Fred Bann; borders and initials by Roycroft artists, and produced by The Roycroft Artists, and produced by The Roycrofters, at their shops, which are in East Aurora, Erie County, New York, MCMXXII. (from last page of vol. 1) Memorial Edition in fourteen volumes of Little Journeys by Elbert Hubbard, printed by request of Earl S. Sloan. Earl S. Sloan's name is printed on the subscriber's page of volume one. The fourteen volumes fit nicely into a Roycroft bookcase built specifically for displaying this set of books published by the same company. Earl S. Sloan is best known for his father, Andrew Sloan's creation 'Sloan's Liniment' which was first used for horses with sore muscles, but was later expanded by his sons, Earl and his brother, to use on humans. This product brought him great success and provided him with the funds necessary for his philanthropic endeavors later in life. There is a story that Earl Sloan was, as a child, not permitted to borrow a book because he was poor. This made him determined to establish a place where any child could easily access books, which he did in 1914 with the creation of a library in Zanesfield. Sloan also founded the Sloan Foundation that, to this day, provides funding and equipment for the Bellefontaine City Schools and the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center. Books were obviously very important in his life. Earl S. Sloan met his wife, Bertha Woolaver (also spelled 'Wolaver'), when he was invited to her father's house in Nova Scotia. This set of books came from an estate in Nova Scotia with volume 14 being signed by Bertha Baird whose letters are referenced in some biographies of Earl Sloan. The Roycroft bookcase accompanying the set is in good condition and has, unlike many others, not been refinished, leaving it with the appearance Roycroft intended. The complete set is in very good condition with very little noticeable wear.
